About the Program
The Quaker Studies Program provides courses that integrate the spirit and intellect of participants through a dynamic study of Quaker faith and practice. They include explorations of the current state of the Society of Friends as well as reviews of Quaker history, Bible study and other areas of particular interest to Friends.
Four to seven programs are offered each year. Programs are usually one day seminars presented in all day Saturday sessions, or series of afternoons or evenings. They are held at various locations in the Boston, Massachusetts, area. The programs are usually led by local Friends with particular interest and expertise. Occasionally a Friend from another yearly meeting will be invited to present a program.
The courses are open to anyone desiring to learn more about the Religious Society of Friends and Quakerism, including new or casual attenders as well as regular attenders and experienced Friends.
The Quaker Studies Committee is a joint effort of the Salem
Quarterly Meeting of New
England Yearly Meeting and Beacon Hill Friends House.
Scholarships:
The cost of the program should not be an obstacle to anyone's participation. Scholarships are available to anyone who expresses a need prior to the course. While the program's costs are kept to a minimum, we understand they may not be affordable to all. To help fund this, all scholarship contributions are much appreciated.
To apply for aid:
Note that you need aid on your
registration form.
Or contact the coordinator before
the program begins.
Aid is available to all who ask.
All participants are expected to
pay a minimal amount.
For courses and workshops which take place in the Boston area and for online courses tuition aid up to 80% of the base tuition is available. Late fees do not qualify for aid
For courses with a residential component (for example, a weekend retreat at Woolman Hill) please see the course information for available aid.
Why Registration Fees:
The Quaker Studies Program is supported by the fees paid by the
participants. The course leaders are paid a modest amount for their
work in developing and leading the programs. Leaders from outside the
Salem Quarter area are also reimbursed for their travel and other
expenses. The Program does receive a small annual grant from Salem
Quarterly Meeting, which helps support the scholarship funds and keep
the registration fees low.

Can you suggest a course, workshop or leader?
Quaker Studies Committee (named by Beacon Hill Friends House and Salem Quarter) develop course ideas from many sources. If there's a subject you want to see covered, or a leader you think we should get, please let us know. We'll include your suggestions in our deliberations. Course planning takes place a year in advance and some ideas may take several years to develop.
