Facing Unbearable Truths
Dr. Harold (Hal) Weaver
Hal's talk will treat the controversial subject of "race" and what Friends can do about it. He will examine Friends' testimonies and queries to see how these tenets of our faith match up with the truths of the history and legacy of chattel slavery in the USA.How have Friends responded to the conflicts that have arisen? Might we consider that, if in the 21st century we honor our testimonies of truth, peace, and equality, should we not also institute a testimony of justice?
The Weed lecture established in 1993, honors the memories of Ernest and Esther Weed, long time co-directors of the House during its formative years. Annually, Beacon Hill Friends House invites a distinguished Friend to deliver this lecture on an aspect of Quakerism of interest to the wider Quaker community.
